Childbirth is seen in Ayurveda as a process that is driven by a strong apanic movement, which allows for the baby to be birthed and leaves the womb space empty after 40 weeks of gestation. The womb is seen, in several traditions as a chalice: Ayurveda acknowledges this very same function of attracting inside of Herself, Vata Dosha, which is bringer of qualities that tend to aggravate the imbalance experienced during childbirth. Across the world, the Mother has been traditionally cared for over 40 days, sometimes up to tree or 6 months: what is currently recognized by modern science, is that the body takes up to 6 weeks to move back to something similar to the "pre-pregnancy state". During the first 10 days, the Sutika, as the postpartum woman is named by the Ayurvedic tradition, is especially in need of care and support through Sutika Paricharya, all the ancient practices that are meant to support the Sutika to become a mother (traditionally after 40 days). One of the pillars of this set of care is offered through touch: this particular form of treatment is based on the ancient Marma tradition. Marma are considered energy centers that are located in the body and have the capacity to act on the subtle forms of the doshas, prana, tejas and ojas and to restore the the balance by activating our own "inner pharmacy". This treatment is offered not as replacement for the more classical Sutikabhyangam, rather as an alternative once assessed mother's needs for healing
